Half-centuries from opener Tamim Iqbal and Mahmudullah helped Bangladesh inch closer towards South Africa's 248 before rain ruined their chances of taking the lead on the second day of the Chittagong Test.

Heavy rains disrupted the third session as the home side made all efforts to take the lead.

Tamim (57) and Mahmudullah (67) both batted superbly and tried to out-pass the South African total as early as possible. The pair saw off the pacers and scored of the slower bowlers without taking undue risk.

Off-spinner Simon Harmer was the pick of the bowlers as he got sharp turn and extra bounce. Vernon Philander bowled on wicket-to-wicket line and was rewarded with the wicket of Mahmudullah.

Bangladesh, presently placed at 179-4, are still trailing by 69 runs with Shakib al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rehman remaining unbeaten at 1 and 16 respectively.
