Over 120 students aged below 15 are going through month-long training at the Th. Birachandra Singh Football Academy Ground in Imphal West.
The talent identification programme is supported by the University Grants Commission, and its objective is to 'catch them young' and sharpen their soccer playing skills.
The youth are being trained under coach N Dhiren Meitei.
N.Dhiren Meitei, a coach, said: "If the UGC organises such football development programs more frequently, then it will definitely help the players. There are many players in Team India, and such initiatives will encourage more players to play for the national team."
Several players from Th. Birachandra Singh Football Academy have already represented the U-14 national team, which had won Manchester United Premier Cup India final 2013.
After the training ends, selected players will head for an international soccer championship in Thailand.
Dinesh Pheiroijam, a trainee, said: "I came here for training and I am very happy with the facilities and good coaching. So, I feel proud to play at Th. Birachandra Singh Football Academy."
Paonam Charan, a trainee, said: "I want to be a famous player. If I play in the World Cup, then I will become a famous football player."
Many football players, including Gouramangi Singh, Govin Singh, Reisangmi Vashum and Sushil, represent Manipur in the national pool of 23.
Manipuri players also represent the Navy, Air India, Services, BSF, CRPF, clubs from Goa, West Bengal and a host of other big names like Mahindra and Mahindra and JCT.
