Legendary New Zealand commentator Ian Smith was forced to watch on as a cricket ball hit by batsman Jesse Ryder crashed into his rental car and he had to talk through the action live on national television.

Smith was calling a domestic Twenty20 game between Otago Volts and Northern Knights when big-hitting New Zealand batsman Ryder belted a ball out of Hamilton's quaint Seddon Park.

Smith said that that is out of the ground, as the ball sailed over the boundary rope, adding that that's gone and it's down town, News.com.au reported.

But his moment of joy at the display of power-hitting soon turned to fear, then disbelief, as Smith foresaw what was about to happen and then watched it unfold.

Smith talked through the six saying that the ball is on his car, adding that he thought it hit his car. He admitted that he does not believe it, while still on air, before stating that that is the downside of getting to park so close.

Mark Richardson, Smith's fellow commentator, could scarcely believe the turn of events and asked him if he paid the insurance.

A shocked Smith replied that the car was a rental and it was his.

Amazingly, this was the same match in which a crowd member won 5,000 New Zealand dollars for taking a spectacular one-handed catch off a six, which was later revealed to have been hit by his girlfriend's brother, the report added.
