Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena has said that his government is committed to strengthening national reconciliation in order to prevent another war in the country.
Speaking at a national ceremony organised in front of the War Hero Monument in the Parliament premises in Battaramulla yesterday, President Sirisena said the new government was elected in expectation of fulfilling the responsibilities of a post-war era.
"The new government is now working for fulfilling the responsibility to prevent another war in the country through strengthening of the national reconciliation," the Colombo Page quoted him, as saying.
"It is not an easy task to unite the hearts of the people while fulfilling of the responsibilities of a post-conflict era after ending the war physically. Politicians, war heroes and the people of the entire country should get together to strengthen the reconciliation process," he added.
Asserting that the government would always perform to commemorate the valiant war heroes who sacrificed their lives for the sovereignty of the country, he assured his commitment for the welfare of the families of the disabled war heroes.
He later paid a floral tribute at the War Heroes Monument.
Apart from Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, Ministers, Secretary of Defense Karunasena Hettiarachchi, Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka, Chief of the Defense Staff, Commanders of Tri Forces, Inspector General of Police, Chairperson of the Ranaviru Seva Authority Anoma Fonseka and the close relatives of the war heroes also participated in the ceremony.
