Congress in favour of dissolution of Delhi Assembly

The Congress on Thursday sought an immediate dissolution of the Delhi Assembly and demanded that fresh elections should be held in the state.

"Delhi has not had a government for the last one year. The Delhi Assembly should be immediately dissolved, elections should be called for and a new government should be formed in Delhi," said Congress leader Manish Tewari.

"After all the dramatist persona has not changed, the situation and circumstances have not changed. One year has elapsed, the President's rule cannot go on forever," he added.

The Supreme Court earlier in the day hailed Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung's efforts to kick off consultations with political parties to explore ways for government formation in Delhi and set November 11 as the next date of hearing.

The apex court had earlier on Tuesday pulled up the Centre and the Lieutenant Governor for delay in taking decision regarding the government formation in Delhi.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal had on Wednesday urged the Lieutenant Governor to call an all-party meeting at the earliest.

Delhi is under President's rule since Kejriwal resigned as the Chief Minister on February 14 after being in office for 49 days.

The BJP won 31 seats in the 70-member house while the AAP emerged victorious in 28 seats in the polls held last year.
