The Congress party on Friday criticized the Government for the latest fuel price hike and said that it reflected insensitivity on the part of ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at the Centre.

"This is totally uncalled for in a very better situation of international oil pricing. I think this deserves to be condemned all around. It shows the insensitivity of the government to the common man. It shows that all (Prime Minister) Modi and BJP talk about is rhetoric," Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi said.

The price of petrol has been increased by Rs. 3.96 per litre and diesel by Rs. 2.37 per litre. The new rates came into effect from last midnight.

Petrol in Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai and Chennai will now cost Rs. 63.16 per litre, Rs. 70.44, Rs. 70.84 and Rs 66.08 respectively. For diesel, the consumers will have to pay Rs. 49.57 per litre in Delhi, Rs 54.17 in Kolkata, Rs 56.87 in Mumbai and Rs 52.76 in Chennai.
