The Congress slammed the government of West Bengal over the non-implementation of the government schemes as the polls to village bodies are scheduled to take place.
The state election commission held a meeting in Kolkata on Saturday over the polling dates that were suggested by the state government.
"The condition of Bengal that is today and the direction in which it is going is very unfortunate. We do not want this. Bengal's industry is punished. There is no new development that had taken place in the agricultural sector in Bengal. The government has no planning as to how they would look into the problems of unemployment and food security. But the schemes of the government for West Bengal have not been implemented here. The government schemes are not implemented. There is no implementation and the funds are sent back. This is very sad," said Congress party leader Pradeep Bhattacharya.
Earlier, differences had emerged between the state government and the Election Commission over the issue of the dates for holding elections with regards to the security arrangements that need to be made for the polls.
The state government had suggested the dates July 2, 6 and 10 for the holding of the village council polls in three phases.
The state government had taken the step after the Calcutta High Court passed a directive on May 14 for holding the village council polls in three phases and the dates be announced in consultation with the election commission.
The state government had initially issued a notification whereby the village council elections would be held in two phases on April 26 and 30.
