Cook's position in team will be doubtful if he gives up ODI captaincy: Vaughan

Former skipper Michael Vaughan has said if Alastair Cook is reportedly looking to give up the one-day captaincy and carry on only as Test captain then his positon itself is in doubt in all formats of the game.

Cook had said that he would reconsider his leadership after the team's dismal show in the Ashes and ODI series.

After their five-nil Ashes triumph, Australia claimed the limited overs series by hammering England by seven wickets with 10 overs to spare on Sunday, further pushing down England's tour.

According to the reports, after the match, the England captain said that he would review his role as the skipper after the tour is over.

Writing in his column for The Telegraph, Vaughan said Cook has clearly got himself in situation where he is questioning his position in all formats of the game and when you find yourself in that sort of place it's difficult to get out of it.

He advised Cook to not take everything on his shoulders, and added that other people are making mistakes, Australia is a very good team at the moment and England is playing away from home where it is always more difficult to win.

Vaughan said Cook will now have to decide at the end of this tour whether he has still got the energy to be England captain and whether he feels that he can help to improve and develop the side.

Earlier, England allrounder Ravi Bopara had urged Cook to stay on as captain, saying the whole player group fully supports the under-siege 29-year-old.
