Days after a portion of CSMT bridge collapsed, the Mumbai Police have arrested Neeraj Desai, who had conducted an audit of the bridge.
"Initially when we visited the spot. An offence of IPC under Sections 304 A, 337 and 338 was registered by seeing the incident. After an investigation, it came out that the structural audit and the negligence on the part of various officials," said DCP Abhishek Trimukhe.
"These are the persons, who are experts in their field and have knowledge that such a negligent act can cause damage to the lives of the people. So, we have applied Section 304 Part 2 instead of 304 A, which means culpable homicide not amounting to murder," said Trimukhe, while talking to media persons on Monday.
"Based on facts, we have taken into custody Neeraj Desai, owner of Desai firm, who was structural auditor of this bridge. We are investigating his role further. We are conducting a professional and independent investigation, and we ensure citizens that a proper charge-sheet will be filed before Court of Law," he said.
As many as six people were killed and 36 others injured after a portion of a foot overbridge near Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in Mumbai collapsed on March 14.
