Former world champion Oscar De La Hoya has launched a blistering tirade against Floyd Mayweather, describing the recently retired boxing champion as 'boring' and 'afraid' in his open letter.

Mexican-American boxer De La Hoya, who was beaten by Mayweather in their super welterweight level fight in 2007, said that boxing would be a better sport without the unbeaten fighter in it, News.com.au reported.

De La Hoya also accused Mayweather of making a career out of being too cautious and said that the pound-for-pound king reached the milestone mark of 49-0 because he was afraid of taking risks.

He also slammed the 38-year-old for picking an easy opponent like Andre Berto for his farewell fight and for running scared from Manny Pacquiao for five years before finally agreeing to the fight.
