At least 27 people have been killed in an attack on a tourist hotel in the resort town of Sousse in Tunisia, an interior ministry official said.

The attack targeted the Imperial Marhaba hotel in the town, reported The Guardian.

A gunman, armed with a Kalashnikov assault rifle, was among those killed. It's not clear if there were other assailants.

Sousse is a popular tourist destination and draws visitors from Europe and other North African countries.

Tunisia has been on high alert since militants killed 22 people, mostly foreign tourists, in an attack on a museum in the capital city of Tunis in March.
