A debt-ridden farmer allegedly committed suicide in Odisha's Kalahandi district, by consuming poison.
After the incident on Saturday, he was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital where he died during treatment on Sunday.
According to his daughter and a close relative, he took a loan for cotton farming in his four acres of land, but due to heavy rain, the crops were damaged.
The farmer believed he would not be able to repay the loan, which forced him to take the drastic step.
India is an agrarian country where 70 per cent of its people are dependent on agriculture. Farmers' suicides in such a scenario are even more worrisome.
Last year, the country saw farmer suicides mostly in Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and Jharkhand.
