Discarded Australian opener Phil Hughes has reportedly gone back to his banana farm after not being selected for Australia tour of South Africa despite being one of the top scorers in the current Sheffield Shield season

The decision of the Australian selectors to choose Western Australia's Shaun Marsh over Hughes has left both the opener and South Australia Cricket officials perplexed after reportedly being given some sort of understanding that he was a certainty for the tour.

The 26-Test batsman is now on his family's Macksville banana farm dissecting the mixed signals of selectors and why making the mountain of first-class runs they demanded this season - 549 at 61- meant nothing, reports news.com.au.

South Australia coach Darren Berry claims Hughes was told after the Ashes tour to England that he needed to make a lot of Shield runs to be considered a certainty for national selection. Now, that he has done so, and is in the top-five run scorers with a double ton and two individual tons, the question being asked of the selectors is why is he not on the plane to South Africa.

Berry is demanding a clarification of Hughes' position from the selectors.
