England captain Alastair Cook admitted being 'devastated' for having lost the chance to win the Champions Trophy in a thrilling battle against Team India in Edgbaston on Sunday.

Cook had hoped to end the 38-year wait for the team to bring home a win in the 50 over tournament but was disappointed when his player slumped to a five-run defeat against India, the Mirror reports.

According to the report, England needed 20 to win off 15 balls and six wickets in place, but Cook's middle order was hit by a sensational attack of panic stations, which made the team drag to 124 for eight.

Dejected Cook said that it was his 'worst day' on England duty adding that the team's loss is a bitter pill to swallow as they had higher expectations of achieving something special.

Cook criticized the Aussie umpire Bruce Oxendale, for making a poor decision after he gave Ian Bell out stumped off man-of-the-match Ravindra Jadeja, despite replays offering no conclusive evidence that the England opener's foot was in the air when the wicket was broken

India's top scorer Virat Kohli admitted that when Morgan and Bopara were smoking it all over the park, the team thought they were out of it, but those two wickets in two balls changed the game, the report added.
