The Nagaland Police on Friday said that it has imposed Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), which prohibits unlawful assembly, on the Dimapur region after a lynch mob attacked and killed a man in the city.
The man in question, identified as 35-year-old Syed Farid Khan, was accused of rape and had been produced in Dimapur Central Jail. According to reports, the mob overpowered security personnel and dragged Khan out while thrashing him, resulting in his death.
"Section 144 of the CrPC has been imposed in Dimapur. The curfew will continue till the situation normalises," Senior Superintendent of Police Meren Jamir told ANI.
"We tried our best to contain the situation, but crowd that had gathered was mostly in school uniforms. Thus, we could not directly fire upon them," he added.
The incident has been condemned by political leaders, who have urged people not to take the law into their own hands and keep their trust in judicial proceedings.
Meanwhile, Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chairperson Barkha Shukla Singh has called for the setting up of fast-track courts to ensure speedy justice to rape victims.
