Former Indian marathon runner Sunita Godara on Friday said culprits do not get punishment at the right time and there is no fear of law in this country.

Godara was referring to the delay in arriving at a decision regarding the acid attack case in Gurdaspur, in which a national level athlete was targeted.

"In these (acid attack) cases the culprits never get punishment at the right time and there is no fear of law in this country," Sunita Godara told ANI here.

"This type of people is increasing day by day as there is no conviction rate. If they are not punished properly within time and with fast track courts, then such people will get more motivation and the number of cases will increase," she added.

Meanwhile, Women rights activist Jagmati Sangwan termed the Gurdaspur incident as 'painful' and said that severe punishment should be given to the culprit.

Earlier this week, two men on a motorcycle threw acid on a national-level netball and hammer throw player in Gurdaspur. The victim was returning home after writing her Class XII examinations.

Punjab Education Minister Daljit Singh Cheema ordered Gurdaspur Deputy Commissioner Abhinav Trikha and SSP Gurpreet Singh Toor to arrest the accused as soon as possible and take severe action against them.
