Republican candidate Wendy Long told the investigators that D'Souza lied to her about the source of donations made to her U.S. Senate campaign in 2012, CBS News reports.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Carrie Cohen said D'Souza had arranged for two individuals, and their spouses, to contribute a total of 20,000 dollars to Long's campaign, which he later reimbursed the donors.

U.S. law had capped the money that a person could donate to a political candidate at 5,000 dollars per race, with up to 2,500 dollars allowed for primary campaigns and 2,500 dollars for general election campaigns.

D'Souza's travel has also been restricted to the United States, the report added.
