The Delhi Government will begin dismantling of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor, which was built in 2008 to reduce the traffic congestion in Delhi, from today.
The 5.8-km long stretch from Moolchand to Ambedkar Nagar was built in 2008 by the previous Sheila Dikshit-led Congress Government at a cost of around Rs 180 crore.
The corridor was introduced to allow buses to ply through a lane free of traffic lights. The aim of introducing it was to create a dedicated lane for buses so that they would not interfere in the movement of other traffic.
The move, instead of solving the problem, compounded it and resulted in huge traffic jams.
According to reports, the dismantling of BRT is expected to be completed by February at at estimated cost of around Rs. 12 crores.
