Chitkara University on Monday announced that its Pro-Chancellor, Dr. Madhu Chitkara was awarded the prestigious Himachal Pradesh Environment Leadership Award 2017 for excelling in the promotion of environmental conservation and sustainable development through inspiring and exemplary initiatives, vision, and transformative action.
Chitkara University was awarded for its effort of recycling waste paper into sheets, folders, envelopes and carry bags and water by dual plumbing.
The government introduced 'Himachal Pradesh Environment Leadership Awards' to be conferred annually to recognise the outstanding contribution by institutions or individuals in the promotion of environmental protection and conservation and sustainable development through inspiring and exemplary initiatives, vision, transformative action on their own.
The individuals, NGOs, institutions from various categories are shortlisted for the award through a competitive process. The event was organised by the State Department of Environment, Science and Technology.
Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh while presiding over Himachal Pradesh Environment Leadership Award-2017 said, "There is much to do when it comes to rebuilding and protecting what's left of natural resources and the biodiversity of our ecosystems. Environmental conservation is an umbrella term that defines anything we do to protect our planet and conserve its natural resources so that every living thing can have an improved quality of life. We all should become soldiers for prevention of environment and voluntarily come forward to protect it as it was a part of our body."

We are happy that the state government recognizes our initiative of setting up the recycling waste paper unit in Himachal Pradesh campus. Chitkara University uses the recycled paper for folders, envelopes, and carry bags. It is a proud moment for us to receive the Environment Leadership Award from the Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh," said Dr. Madhu Chitkara.
Chitkara University campus has a tag of eco-friendly campus. Other than the paper recycling initiative, Chitkara University has many other initiatives for environment conservation. Sewage treatment plant installed in campus is fully functional, and the recycled water is used for watering lawns, cleaning campus, vegetable gardening so on. Noise-free generators, natural rain water drain facility, parking, flora and fauna, socio economic, solid waste treatment, nursery, solar system initiatives contribute to eco-friendly campus.
