Scientists have revealed that even having only "one too many" glasses of wine can cause significant harm to the body.

According to the researchers, women drinking four or more alcoholic drinks over two hours (five or more for men) risk causing bugs to leak from the gut, sending levels of dangerous toxins in the blood soaring, the Daily Express reported.

The study by the University of Massachusetts Medical School has found that that bacteria called endotoxins can leak into the blood, which can cause fever, inflammation and tissue destruction.

The study was published in the journal PLOS ONE.
