Hitting out at the monster of drugs, alcohol and cash gnawing the poll bound state of Punjab, the Election Commission on Tuesday informed about the two entities especially formed to combat it.
"Flying squad and static surveillance team has been formed since the time Model Code of Conduct has come into place. 451 flying squads and 504 static surveillance teams have been activated in Punjab, which work round the clock," said an Election Commission official while addressing the media here.
Assuring that all the divisions are working together to mitigate the influence of drugs and alcohol during the elections, the official said, "Static surveillance team, flying squad, police and independent excise officers are working to enforce code of conduct and to minimise the influence of drugs, alcohol and cash during the elections."
As is what is practised in every election, this time also deposit of arms and ammunitions is taking place aggressively, with the aim of getting near 100 percent deposit of arms.
"Submission of arms and ammunitions during the elections plays a major role in getting elections peacefully conducted. Total arms are around 3.5 lakhs out of which 182 have been submitted. There is a committee headed by deputy commissioner which in special cases may allow a person to carry arms. Otherwise, we are aiming to get near 100% deposit of arms," he said.
Punjab will go for polls in a single-phase on February 4. The date of notification is January 11, the last date of nomination is January 18, the scrutiny of nomination will take place on January 19 and the withdrawal of candidature will take place on January 21.
The term of the legislative assembly of Punjab will expire on March 18.
