Gujarat Chief Minister and Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi on Sunday said that education is not only important for individual's progress but for nation building as well.
'Even after 65 years of independence, we have not been able to focus on education. Education is not only important for individual's progress but for nation building. Knowledge is the biggest strength with the citizens and for the nation. This is also the most important tool for fighting poverty," he said while delivering the convocation address at the SRM University here today.
Modi appealed to the outgoing batch to work towards enhancing the image of this country, while complementing the SRM University for proving practical experience in new and emerging technologies.
"Do whatever you can to enhance the image of the country and its development. I compliment the SRM University for providing training and practical experience in new and emerging technologies including nanotechnology. This will definitely help our country," he said.
Referring to the newly appointed CEO of Microsoft Satya Nadella, Modi said that this is a matter of pride for India, but advised the students to create similar opportunities in India.
"Most of you much must to reach to the heights of Satya Nadella and other such people. My advice to you is to create a similar enterprise here. Create a Microsoft, an Apple, or a Google here in India," he added.
He also urged everyone to work towards helping and empowering the less privileged students in the area of education.
"There are very few who are able to reach such prestigious institutions. There are only few who are able to make it to any credible educational institutions. This is our biggest challenge. I would like you to do whatever you can to help and empower the less privileged brother and sisters," he added.
The 9th Convocation ceremony of SRM University was held at Dr. T. P. Ganesan Auditorium in Kattankulathur here.
