The European Union is expected to announce today the action it will take against Google over alleged anti-trust behaviour.

Margrethe Vestager, the competition commissioner, is expected to announce a "statement of objections" later in the day, reported the BBC.

Such an action would mark an escalation in the Commission's handling of anti-trust complaints that claimed Google favoured its own products over others in search engine results.

Icomp, a lobbying group representing the complainants, said that if the search engine took the view that users were best served by search results that integrated additional services, Google must choose the services that would benefit the consumers most, even if the services are not its own.

The complainants objected to the fact that the tech giant placed reviews from Google+, directions from Google Maps, music and videos from YouTube, and adverts from its Adwords platform ahead of others' links in relevant searches.

Last year, Google agreed to change the way its search results were displayed, but the changes it suggested were deemed to be "insufficient."

Google accounts for more than 90 percent of web searches in the region.

It could face huge fines and directives to reshape its business in Europe.
