Security Expert Alok Bansal on Thursday said U.S. President Barack Obama's decision to start attacking ISIS positions in Syria shows that even the West perceives it as a threat to global peace and security.

"The decision of U.S. President Barack Obama to start attacking Islamic State positions in Syria is a new development because, till now, U.S. operations were confined only to Iraq. This move by the U.S. shows that even the West perceives the Islamic State as a threat to global peace and security," Bansal told ANI here.

"This is a very important step taken by the U.S. because, the position of the Islamic State Syria is getting stronger as the local forces have not been able to contain the Islamic State's advances in Syrian territory. Now, the Islamic State will be forced to halt by the American air strikes in the same way that their progress in northern Iraq was stopped," he added.

Bansal further said that now with the backing of U.S. air strikes on ISIS even the Syrian forces will get a chance to revive peace in their country.

Obama had earlier said that U.S. air strikes that have been targeting the jihadists in Iraq will also be expanded to cover ISIS targets in Syria.

Obama warned that he will not hesitate to take military actions against ISIS in Iraq or Syria because they threaten America's security. He added that the US will hunt down the terrorists wherever they are.
