Former Pakistani refugee Fawad Ahmed may reportedly make his highly-anticipated debut for Australia in the first Twenty20 international against England on Friday after earning his selection in his adopted homeland's limited overs squad.
According to News.com.au, Ahmed had been debated as a late addition in Australia's squad for the just-completed Ashes series in England after amendments to citizenship laws but he instead toured with Australia A in the UK and South Africa.
Although Ahmed is still in doubt for the six one-day fixtures against Ashes winner England, T20 captain George Bailey said that Ahmed is in contention to play in the batting-friendly T20s although his playing may depend on the wicket, if it is dry as some of the Test match wickets.
According to Bailey, for Ahmed, it is as much about settling in and playing cricket rather than the hype about where he is from and so on, adding that the focus has been on his four-day and Test match bowling to get him to develop his skill set for short form.
The report further said that Ahmed, who averages 31.44 in first-class cricket and 39.16 in domestic one-dayers, largely struggled in his Australia A matches, although he took four wickets each in four-day fixtures against South Africa A in Rustenburg and a Zimbabwe select side in Pretoria.
