Most popular exit polls have predicted a return of Left Front in Kerala and Congress-DMK alliance in Puducherry while the DMK-Congress alliance and AIADMK are in close battle in Tamil Nadu.

There are however differences by various agencies and final result will only be known on Thursday when counting will be held.

The prediction for Kerala is unanimous as all of them say the Left Democratic Front is going to dislodge Oommen Chandy's government and in Puducherry, the agencies predict that All India NR Congress is going to be toppled by Congress-DMK alliance.

Yesterday, Puducherry registered the maximum votes with 81.94 per cent, while Tamil Nadu and Kerala stood at 69.19% and 71% respectively.

In Kerala, where 140 seats are up for voting, around 26 million voters exercised their franchise to elect a new government in the state currently ruled by the Congress party and its allies.

The state has traditionally been ruled alternatively by two major coalitions since the past three decades: the UDF (United Democratic Front) led by Congress party and the Left Democratic Front (LDF) led by CPI-M (Communist Party of India-Marxist).

Results of elections in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Assam and West Bengal will be announced on May 19.
