At least 27 people have been killed and 100 others injured in an explosion in the Turkish town of Suruc near the Syrian border, the country's interior ministry said.

The ministry termed the incident a terror attack that targeted the unity of the country and urged everyone to 'stand together and remain calm,' reported The Guardian.

Pervin Buldan, a senior lawmaker from the pro-Kurdish Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) opposition party, said that the blast took place in the garden of a cultural centre at a time when several Turkish and Kurdish youths had gathered there ahead of a planned visit to the town of Kobani in Syria, which was retaken by Syrian Kurdish troops last month from the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

She said local officials were trying to determine if the incident was a suicide bombing.
