Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday accused the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led NDA government of punishing the farmers, while adding that his party was always with them.

"The Modi Government helps their crony corporates. In Parliament, they said suicides aren't taking place. I want to tell the farmers and labourers not to worry, the Congress party is with them. We will help them," Gandhi said at the Lady Hardinge Hospital here.

"Farmers are being punished by the Modi government. Foundation of the country has been laid by the farmers. We will fight the ordinance, we won't let the BJP government just take the land of our poor farmers," he added.

The Congress vice-president's comments came after a farmer from Rajasthan committed suicide by hanging himself at the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP ) rally in Delhi. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was among the hundreds of people who witnessed the spectre.

The farmer belonged to Rajasthan's Dausa district. He reportedly left a suicide note where he said he was unable to feed his three children anymore.

The incident also sparked criticism for Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, with opposition parties condemning that the rally went on despite the grave incident.
