A seven-storey Slum Rehabilitation Area (SRA) building caught fire here in the early hours of Monday, claiming four lives and injured at least 10 others.
As per officials, the fire erupted between 2.30 a.m. and 3 a.m. this morning in a meter cabin of the building, and is said to have spread through a wire in the cabin.
"Three people got burns on their hands; one child, one woman and two men have been killed. The injured have been admitted to Raja hospital," said Police Inspector Ramesh Bhore.
Four fire engines, four tankers and an ambulance reached the spot and the fire was put out in about four hours.
"Fire is now under control and the rescue operations are on. 10-12 people have been injured, out of which eight people have been taken to Rajawadi hospital and four people are admitted in Sion hospital," said fire brigade official Harish Shetty.
People living on the lower floors could escape the fire, but the residents of the fifth, sixth and seventh floors got stuck inside the building.
Fire safety regulations are lax, rarely implemented and not periodically reviewed in India, which results in the outbreak of major fires resulting in the loss of life and property.
