At least five people lost their vision after being administered an infected injection in Uttar Pradesh's Varanasi city.

Seven patients were operated at Sir Sunderlal Hospital's ophthalmology department on January 28 and administered an injection 'Avastin, the vial of which turned out to be infected.

The patients alleged that they were administered the injection by Dr. OP Singh Maurya following which they developed serious complications and lost vision.

The victims registered a police complaint at the Lanka Police Station yesterday against the doctor.

Station House Officer (SHO) Sanjeev Kumar said an inquiry has been ordered in the case.

"Five of the seven patients, who were given injections, have lost vision in one eye. We are investigating about the other two. I have spoken to the head of the health department in Varanasi and all the documents and statements have been provided to them for further investigation," said Kumar.

Vinod Kumar Singh, one of the victims, narrated the ordeal.

"I was told that there is a blood clot in my retina. I was told that I will be given an injection after which my eye sight will improve. I was called on January 28 for treatment when I was given an injection 'Avastin' following which I lost my vision," he said.
