Claiming a victory in the Nigerian presidential elections, former military ruler Muhammadu Buhari has become the first opposition candidate to achieve the feat.
Incumbent Goodluck Jonathan called Buhari on Tuesday night to congratulate him and concede defeat, reported the BBC.
A statement released by the outgoing president said he had promised the country free and fair elections and kept his word. He urged those, who felt aggrieved to follow the due process, to seek redress.
Unofficial voting tallies placed Buhari more than two million votes ahead of his rival.
A spokesman for Buhari's All Progressives Congress (APC) party lauded Jonathan by saying that he would remain a hero for this move and added that it will lower the tension in the country "dramatically."
Meanwhile, Buhari's supporters took to the streets in APC strongholds, including the northern cities of Kano and Kaduna, to celebrate.
