Germany on Thursday officially chose 'Never Look Away' to be submitted in the 'foreign language' category for the 91st Academy Awards, set to be held next year.

The film which is directed by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck is a story about a young artist (Tom Schilling) who escapes to West Germany from East Germany. But the artist remains haunted by his childhood spent under the Nazis and his youth affected by communism.

As soon as the artist sets foot in the West, he begins to paint, and through this art, he starts to explore the trauma of the past.

The film stars Tom Schilling, Paula Beer, Sebastian Koch, Saskia Rosendahl and Ina Weisse. The film beat German competitor '3 Days in Quiberon' to qualify in the foreign-language category.

After Germany's unification, it received two Oscars in the foreign-language category, which include Donnersmarck's 'The Lives of Others'.

Earlier in August, Turkey chose the film 'The Wild Pear Tree' and Ukraine chose 'Donbass' for the 'foreign-language' category in the Oscars.
