'Gutted' Rooney quashes England retirement talks

Following England's humiliating defeat at the hands of minnows Iceland in the European Championship, skipper Wayne Rooney has dismissed suggestions that he is considering retirement from the national team.

Expressing his desire to continue playing for England, Rooney insisted that he felt extremely proud to be a part of the national side.

The Manchester United striker netted the lone goal for England before they were knocked out of the Euro 2016 by underdogs islanders 1-2 at Allianz Riviera in Nice on Tuesday.

Rooney said that it was quite disappointing to lose the game despite having some really good chances to score.

"I feel disappointed, gutted, it's a hard one to take. We had a good chance of going through and after such a good start, conceding two sloppy goals, we're disappointed," he said in the mixed zone after the final whistle," the 30-year-old was quoted as saying by goal.com.

Following the defeat, manager Roy Hodgson stepped down from the post, informing that he would be leaving the team on the expiry of his contract this month.

Hodgson has won 33 out of 56 games in his four-year tenure as England boss .

Reflecting on the same, Rooney said that Hodgson should be appreciated for the work he has put in for the team, pointing out that the latter had given opportunity to several youngsters.

The England skipper, however, added that he is extremely excited to see how the new manager would lead the national side.

Iceland will now lock horns with France for a place in the semi-finals at Stade de France on July 4.
