A hardcore ULFA militant has been arrested by police in Assam's Jorhat District during a joint operation conducted with the Central Reserve Police Force in Selenghat village.

This was confirmed by Jorhat Superintendent of Police Sanjukta Parashar

The joint operation was conducted after getting specific information about the movement of ULFA in the Teok area with a purpose to serve demand notes to some local businessmen of the area.

The joint team zeroed in on the residence of one Pranab Saikia, a resident of Selenghat and subsequently arrested Kamal Saikia alias Ranjit Gogoi, who has been with the ULFA since 2007.

Along with Kamal, Ajay Chakravarty an ULFA linkman who arranged the shelter for the militant was arrested by the police.

Police said they have recovered six mobile handsets and three demand notes signed by Jivan Asom, finance secretary of ULFA from Kamal.

In each demand note, the outfit has demanded Rs. 5 lakh each.

Assam police refused to give the identity of the businessmen whose name were mentioned in the demand notes.

According to top police official, Kamal came all the way from Myanmar with a sole purpose of serving the demand notes to local businessmen and was on his way back to his camp in Myanmar before his arrest.

After interrogating Kamal, the police arrested six more linkmen, including one surrendered ULFA from the same locality.

Kamal, 26, is a resident of Merrapani in Assam's Golaghat District and had undergone intensive weapons training in Myanmar.
