A man has been arrested from Panchkula on the charges wrongful confinement and cheating a Russian woman on the pretext of marriage, Haryana Police said on Sunday.
They said the woman got in touch with Deepak, a resident of Rattewali, Panchkula, last year on social media. He asked her to come to India from Russia by giving the false impression of marrying her. She came to India on July 18 with USD 14,606.
"On July 24, Deepak took her to Yamuna Nagar on the pretext of meeting his parents. Soon after reaching there, he left her on road after snatching USD 14,606 and her mobile phone. The motive of the accused was to loot her," Deputy Superintendent of Police Yamuna Nagar Ashish Chaudhary told ANI.
The case was entrusted to the Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) of Haryana Police and Deepak was arrested in less than 24 hours from Sector 10 in Panchkula, he said.
The woman is currently with the Russian Embassy in Delhi.
A case has been registered under various sections, including criminal conspiracy, of the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology Act.
Giving details, Chaudhary, "We received a call that an unknown person has left a foreign woman in Yamuna Nagar. Acting on the complaint, a police team immediately reached on spot and brought her to the police station. She was not able to understand English language. When we checked her bag, we found a Russian passport. We contacted the Russian Embassy and later sent her there.
