Former New Zealand skipper Brendon McCullum has joined one of cricket's most exclusive clubs by becoming the second player in the history of the game to reach 9000-run mark in Twenty20 cricket.
The 36-year-old, who only plays in franchise T20 cricket now, achieved the feat during Royal Challengers Bangalore's (RCB) four-wicket defeat at the hands of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) clash at the Eden Gardens on Sunday.
Needing only eight runs to reach the milestone, McCullum went on to smash quick-fire 43 runs off 27 balls to reach on a total of 9,035 runs in the format at an average of 30.94 and a strike rate of 137.81.
McCullum achieved the landmark when he smashed a six off Vinay Kumar's delivery in the fourth ball of RCB's innings before being dismissed by Sunil Narine in the ninth over, Sport24 reported.
Currently, McCullum only trails West Indies swashbuckling batsman Chris Gayle in the list of top run-scorers in T20 cricket.
The Caribbean has amassed a staggering 11,068 runs in 323 matches he has played so far.
Meanwhile, West Indies all-rounder Kieron Pollard (8, 048 runs), Pakistan veteran batsman Shoaib Malik (7,728) and former Australian vice-captain David Warner (7,668) complete the top five run-scorers in the shortest format of the game.
