Condemning the incident of a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA pulling up a woman IPS officer publicly, the Indian Police Service (Central) Association on Monday called out for suitable punishment in order to enable the police to protect the people.

The IPS (Central) Association took to its official Twitter handle to give out a stern and clear message.

"Condemn incident against ASP #Gorakhpur. If interference in law enforcement goes unpunished, ability of police to protect people gets eroded," it tweeted.

Circle officer Charu Nigam was at the receiving end of BJP MLA Radha Mohan Das Aggarwal for removing some people protesting against a liquor shop, which the minister had otherwise told to stay put till his arrival.

In the video, the MLA can be seen shouting at the woman IPS officer.

Some people were protesting against a liquor shop which the police forcibly dispersed. The MLA reached the spot on the protesters' complaint and told the woman officer that liquor shops were not allowed to function in densely populated areas as per the state government's orders.

Visuals of Nigam taking out her handkerchief and wiping her tears was captured.

Nigam accused the MLA of misbehaving and insulting her.

However, the MLA refused to apologise to the woman officer and instead, accused her of exercising high-handedness with the protesters.
