The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday said the Janata Parivar merger was an 'act of desperation' and added that the coming together of six parties reflected a 'war for existence'.

They had badly lost in 2014 and out of desperation they have come together because this is a war for existence," added spokesperson Sambit Patra.

Another party leader said the merger has no political importance.

"This has certainly become a good media event, but it does not have any political importance," said spokesperson Narasimha Rao.

Meanwhile, party leader Shahnawaz Hussain said that even though six parties have come together in the merger, they would not be able to stop the BJP from winning in Bihar.

"The differences are clear before the formal merger. Even the sign name and symbol haven't been decided yet. Even if they all come together they can't stop BJP in Bihar," he said.

Earlier in the day, the political heads of the six parties involved in the Janata Parivar merger unanimously declared Samajwadi Party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav as the head of the new front.

In order to take on Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led BJP, six parties from the Janata Parivar have decided to come together and form a new political front.

The six parties, which have come together are Nitish Kumar's Janata Dal (United), Lalu Prasad's Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Mulayam Singh Yadav's Samajwadi Party (SP), Om Prakash Chautala's Indian National Lok Dal (INLD), Janata Dal (Secular) led by former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda and Samajwadi Janata Party (SJP).
