Montu Borah, a 39-year-old resident of Kathonibari Gaon in Jorhat, has set an example for the youth of the region, by successfully running a fish farming business for the past fifteen years.

Montu discontinued his studies and started cultivating Rabi crops.

With the little money he had, he then started a small fish farm in 1998. Today, he produces around 5000-6000 kilograms of fish annually and is planning to expand his fishery business.

He earns around Rs.2.5-3 lakhs per annum. He is also keen to help villagers who want to take up fish farming.

Borah said: "Seeing my work, the people who worked with me gradually started their own cultivation. Others also developed an interest after seeing the ponds. Now, I have 15-20 boys working with me. I want them to progress so I gave them money to get fish seed and start their own business."

Besides his fish farming business, Montu has also taken up goat rearing, rice and vegetable cultivation.

Through his ventures, he is providing work to other youth of the village.

Bhaiti Kanta, an employee of Montu, said: "I am working under Montu Bhaiya.I am earning well. Earlier, I had no work. Now, I have learnt how to do business. He has given me fish seed. Now, I will start my own work and lead a good life.
