Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad on Friday said it is a great moment for the country that an Indian Kailash Satyarthi has been awarded with the Nobel Peace Prize, and added that the noted child rights activist has made the nation proud.
Extending his warm greetings to Satyarthi, Prasad congratulated him for the honour.
"The kind of work he has done in the field of children education, children security and also reinforcing the great tradition of India that the potential of our children is required to be conserved for a better India for tomorrow. I warmly congratulate him. He has made us proud today," said Prasad.
"Malala has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize today. It is equally a matter of great assurance two people working for peace, children rights, children education and children security have been awarded this historic Nobel Peace Prize; it is an indication of the rising power of Asia," he added.
Earlier in the day, Kailash Satyarthi and Pakistani child education activist Malala Yousafzai were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize by the Norwegian Nobel Committee.
"Showing great personal courage, Kailash Satyarthi, maintaining Mahatma Gandhi's tradition, has headed various forms of protests and demonstrations, all peaceful, focusing on the grave exploitation of children for financial gain. He has also contributed to the development of important international conventions on children's rights," the committee said.
Pointing out that the figure for child labourers had come down by 78 million globally, the committee also said that the fight for the right of children led to fraternity between nations.
"The struggle against suppression and for the rights of children and adolescents contributes to the realization of the 'fraternity between nations' that Alfred Nobel mentions in his will as one of the criteria for the Nobel Peace Prize," it stated.
