Kalam remained committed towards nation's development: Amit Shah

Expressing condolence over the demise of former president A P J Abdul Kalam, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah on Tuesday said the former remained dedicated towards national development even after stepping down from the post of President.

"As a scientist he made great contribution to India's space mission and missile mission. Everyone made him President because of his contribution to science and space. Even after becoming the President he remained in touch with the people...Even after he stepped down from the post of President he remained dedicated to nation's development, he was committed towards students, science, scientists and development of villages," said Shah during his address at the Parliament Annexe here.

"The vacuum left after his demise will be difficult fill for a long time. I pray that god gives peace to his soul. There is no doubt that his life will inspire people for a long time," he added.

Kalam passed away in Shillong last evening.

Kalam collapsed after a massive cardiac arrest while delivering a lecture at the Indian Institute of Management in Shillong yesterday.

The government has declared a seven-day national mourning as a mark of respect for Dr. Kalam, who played a stellar role in advancing India's nuclear programme.

Considered one of the most popular presidents of India, Kalam became the 11th head of the state during the NDA government headed by Atal Bihari Vajpayee and occupied the post between 2002 and 2007.
