Kanimozhi thanks Sonia Gandhi after wining a seat in Rajya Sabha

Senior leader of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, here on Saturday met ruling Congress Party President Sonia Gandhi to thank her after winning poll to Parliament's upper house with Congress support.

"In the Rajya Sabha elections, Congress Party extended its support to the DMK and made us win it. So in a goodwill gesture, I met madam Sonia Gandhi and extended my thanks to her," said Kanimozhi in New Delhi.

The Congress Party, which has five legislators in Tamil Nadu assembly, extended support to Kanimozhi, daughter of Karunanidhi - President of DMK.

Her re-election would have been in jeopardy without Congress' support.

A section of media also speculated that Congress was getting closer to former ally DMK, which ended nine-year-old alliance in March on the Sri Lankan Tamils issue. The relations between the two parties were also strained following the controversy sparked off by the spectrum allocation scam The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had charged 19 people, including former telecom minister A. Raja, in the multi-billion spectrum allocation scam.
