The 47-day ban on fishing, which has been imposed to facilitate the breeding of fish, will come into effect along the Kerala coast from midnight today.
The ban on fishing has been imposed to safeguard fish during their breeding season. The ban during the breeding season helps replenish the fish stock in the sea by preventing large-scale netting of young fish and eggs.
During the ban period, the mechanised fishing boats, trawlers, including traditional boats are banned from carrying out fishing activities in the waters.
Traditionally, the ban used to be imposed only on mechanized boats, but this year, it has been extended even to the traditional fishing boats. This move had attracted some opposition from the fishing unions.
