Lankan newspaper publishes team 'obituary' post Colombo drubbing

Following Sri Lanka's first ever Test loss to Bangladesh, a newspaper in the country has published an obituary for Sri Lankan cricket.

The Mushfiqur Rahim-led side, who were playing their 100th Test, defeated Sri Lanka by four wickets in their second Test in Colombo to clinch what was their first victory away from home against top-class opponents.

Besides this, Bangladesh's only other victories on foreign soil since gaining Test status in 2000 came against fellow strugglers Zimbabwe and once-formidable West Indies, which had been weakened since the departure of some key players in the recent years.

A Sri Lankan newspaper 'The Island' on Monday published an obituary for Sri Lankan cricket following the loss. "RIP Sri Lanka," read the headline.

According to Sport24, the article in the newspaper worded as such:

"In affectionate remembrance of Sri Lankan cricket which died at the Oval on 19, March 2017.

"The body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Bangladesh."

In 1882, The Sporting Times newspaper in England published a satirical obituary of English cricket after Australia defeated England on English soil, creating the Ashes legend.

It should be noted that the heart-wrenching loss to Bangladesh comes less than a year after Sri Lanka completed a historic clean sweep of Australia in their three-match Test series.
