A protest by farmers took an ugly turn as the police lathi-charged the demonstrators. The farmers were demanding a greater supply of water from the nearby Nilwande Dam.

With work still ongoing on the dam, the farmers have been getting a smaller amount of water than usual. The farmers were agitating for a larger release of water for irrigational purposes. But an appearance by Maharashtra chief minister Prithviraj Chavan caused the farmers to start shouting slogans, in reply to which the police were forced to resort to lathi-charging the protestors.
