An earthquake measuring 3.6 magnitude on the Richter scale hit the Italian island of Ischia, off the coast of Naples, on Monday night, in which several buildings collapsed.

Local media reports said, "A shock magnitude 3.6 earthquake was recorded at 20:57pm in front of Ischia Island."

"People poured into the street while an electric blackout was in the centre of Ischia port," the reports added.

One woman has been reportedly killed. Several have been feared injured and missing.

A church has been destroyed and many hotels have been isolated.

The earthquake happened during the height of the tourist season.

More details are awaited.
