Maharashtra Assembly polls: Rashid Alvi claims seat sharing with ally NCP will be resolved

Congress leader Rashid Alvi on Monday claimed that the seat sharing impasse with the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) will be resolved, and also hoped that the ruling Congress-NCP government will once again be re-elected by the people of Maharashtra in the upcoming assembly elections in the state.

"It is our internal matter as far as our alliance with NCP is concerned and I assure you that the problem will be solved," Alvi told here.

"But as far as the alliance and dispute between BJP and Shiv Sena is concerned, they are fighting for the post of chief ministership. I have already suggested they are fighting for nothing. Again in Maharashtra the Congress party is going to form the government," he said.

He also stated that if the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance doesn't come to power in Maharashtra, therefore no question should arise of them getting the Chief Minister post.

"People of Maharashtra they are going to give their mandate to the Congress party to form the government. So where is the question for the BJP and the Shiv Sena to form the government. Chief Minister is only possible if they form the government, which is not possible," he added.

The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has called its core committee meeting in Mumbai today to discuss the seat sharing issue with Congress.

The NCP had earlier given a one day ultimatum to the Congress to finalise the seat sharing deal.

The Congress has informed that its first probables list will be announced today.

The stalemate between the Congress and NCP over seat sharing is brewing with the latter not willing to contest in less than 136 seats. The Congress has reportedly offered only 125 seats to its ally keeping the rest of the seats with itself to contest in the upcoming state assembly polls.

During the 2009 Maharashtra Assembly elections, the Congress had contested in 174 seats while the NCP had fought in 114 seats.

The polling for 288 assembly seats in Maharashtra is scheduled to be held on October 15. The counting of votes will take place on October 19.
