Manchester United will face Liverpool in the final of the International Champions Cup on Monday in Miami after new boss Louis van Gaal's side defeated Real Madrid in the Michigan Stadium.

United will now face their fiercest rivals Liverpool on Monday in the final. Van Gaal's side extended their unbeaten run on their US tour to four games and would be looking for a winning send-off against Brendan Rodgers' side in Miami as the perfect start for the new campaign.

United had to avoid defeat to make it to the final, and ran out deserved winners against the reigning European champions, who failed to match the intensity and hunger of their opponents, the Mirror reported.

United took the lead in the 21st minute with a flowing move involving Darren Fletcher, Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck, and a proven finish from Ashley Young. It was Young's third goal of the tour after his double in United's opening 7-0 win over LA Galaxy.

Gareth Bale provided the equaliser for Real but United restored their lead 10 minutes later, with Young being involved once again.

Even the introduction of Real's new star Cristiano Ronaldo with 17 minutes left in the game could not inspire Carlos Ancelotti's men to a comeback.

United's substitute Javier Hernandez sealed the win with an angled header nine minutes from time to set up the mouthwatering clash with their fiercest rivals in Miami.

Van Gaal said he thanks Liverpool for being in the final, and added that he feels it is good for English football that two teams from the Premier League are in the final.

The Dutchman said that it is all preparation time for them and Liverpool, but it is better to win than lose. He added that it is amazing that within the space of 14 days United squad has played in front of more than 3,00,000 fans, with more to come in Miami.
