Mauricio Pochettino dubs Tottenham's 5-1 loss at Newcastle as 'worst day'

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino has admitted that his side's humiliating defeat at the hands of relegated Newcastle marks his 'worst day' as a manager as the Spurs finished their Premier League campaign at the third spot.

Tottenham needed just one point going into the final game to finish second, and above Arsenal for the first time since Arsene Wenger has taken the helm, but they failed to do so after suffering a 1-5 defeat at the hands of 10-man Newcastle at St James' Park.

Meanwhile, Wenger's side went on to clinch 4-0 win over Aston Villa to ensure Tottenham finish the season at the third spot.

Disappointed with the result, Pochettino issued an apology to his fans for the performance on the pitch which he described to be 'shameful'.

"First of all I want to apologise to our fans, our supporters because it was a shame what happened on the pitch," the Argentine manager was quoted as saying by goal.com.

Pochettino, however, called on his side to try to improve their mentality if they don't want to be on the losing side in future.

"We need to learn, we need to improve our mentality. It wasn't a tactical problem it was a mental problem. When you go into the pitch you need to give 100 per cent. We need to show more character," he added.
