"Shocked. Vinod Mehta no more. Wonderful writer, dear friend. Preceded me as editor of Sunday Observer and Pioneer. Last of the Great Editors," Mitra stated in a tweet.

Rajdeep Sardesai, another senior journalist, stated that Mehta was exceptional and that he belonged to the 'old school' of Mumbai editors.

"An iconic editor and friend passes away. Brave and irreverent till the end. Vinod Mehta RIP," Sardesai tweeted.

"In an age of Pygmy editors who won't stand up to be counted, Vinod Mehta was exceptional. The old school of Mumbai editors. RIP," he said in another tweet.

"World's a poorer place without you, Vinod. You were the best boss ever in @Outlookindia...Heaven acquires an editor of editors! #Vinod Mehta," Ghose tweeted.

Noted journalist Swapan Dasgupta, recalled Mehta's love for gossip.

"Vinod Mehta loved gossip: it made 4 his facile political understanding. But he knew what lay reader liked on a lazy day: sex and irreverence".

Shekar Gupta also recollected his association with Mehta.

"#VinodMehta, we agreed often, disagreed sometimes. With principled passion and beliefs. Most of all, a fellow dog lover. You'll be missed. RIP," Gupta tweeted.
